Just as the much-addicted and troubled actor was beginning to get his own act together, we now learn that Robert Downey Jr.’s son, Indio, has been arrested on drug charges. A representative of the famous actor said of the star’s son, “Unfortunately there’s a genetic component to addiction and Indio has likely inherited it.” Language has a colloquialism for it: “Like father, like son.” Or “A chip off the old block.” However it’s described, or whatever hereditary concepts are used to express it, the phenomenon of trans-generational, replicated behavior is evidence of a generational curse. In the 1990s before his current comeback, the elder Downy had to undergo substance abuse treatment several times, including one at a California State Prison. Supposedly clean now for a dozen plus years, one has to wonder how he is handling the anguish of seeing his son go down the same destructive road.
To correct addictive behavior there are important functions to be played by addiction counselors, medical doctors, and therapist who specialize in this area. They all make contributions, but the important questions to be asked are:
A) Will secular treatment programs have long range success without a spiritual component?
B) Will successive generations suffer the same fate without deliverance being a factor?
The answer to “B” seems to be a resounding, “No!” If the elder Downy has turned his life around without God or the breaking of generational curses, that’s great, at least in a temporal sense. But whatever help he did get probably didn’t address the matter of breaking generational curses. Hence his son, who was a pre-pubescent child while Downey Jr. was struggling with addiction, followed his dad’s generational propensities. Indio is an adult now and has to deal with his own issues, but I pray someone reaches him, turns him to Christ, and then breaks the curse of addiction on that bloodline so yet another generation won’t be at risk.
