How many must die?

How many more must die? How many more innocent lives will end before we “get it?” Something is terribly wrong in our country. We’ve barely sentenced James Holmes to life in prison for killing 12 and wounding 70 in a Colorado theater; we’ve just started to make sense of the Chattanooga shooting of five military personnel; we’ve tried to understand the senseless slaughter of nine church goers in Charleston. And then it happened again, this weekend. Details are still sketchy, but we do know that a man in Houston, Texas murdered an entire family of eight, mother and father plus six children, one aged six. The man, David Conley, was apparently mad at the mother, a former “domestic partner” for having changed the locks on the doors. (He had once lived there with her.)

The chart above is telling. The overall trajectory of shooting incidents is on the rise, a fact attested to by anyone who follows the news headlines regularly. Of course, guns are always blamed, but that doesn’t explain why killings are increasing. “Evil men will go from bad to worse,” 2 Timothy 3:13 warns us of the End Times. That happens when the moral restraints of society reach such a low point that demonic forces are no longer hindered from their evil. An exorcism is a microcosm of the battle between good and evil. God wins when the godly refuse to yield ground to Satan. During a deliverance I could stop, walk away, and surrender by default. Of course, I refuse to do that and persist in the battle against the devil. In our world today, too many indulge in such a cesspool of degenerate filth that there is nothing to stop demons from running roughshod. Refusing to wage true spiritual warfare, most churches have thrown up their hands in surrender. If we made IN THE NAME OF JESUS the battle cry of our nation and churches, there were would be less impetus for evil to further murder in America.

An encouraging word: DON’T FRET

“Do not fret because of evil men,” Psalm 24:19 encourages us. Frankly, that’s hard to do. As society departs further and further from biblical principles, it’s difficult not to become worried. But the Bible tells us that the evil will not ultimately triumph. The following verse in Psalms says, “The evil man has no future hope . . . the lamp of the wicked will be snuffed out.” So, relax a little. Don’t let down your defenses or fail to fight wickedness wherever you encounter it, but don’t fret.
