Days of Noah

It wasn’t exactly a flood of biblical proportions, but to Florida victims of hurricane Irma, it sure felt like it. Some, whose homes and possessions were inundated with water, like those victims of hurricane Harvey in Houston, must have felt a little like Noah without an ark. The bright side to this tragedy was the evidence of caring, selfless efforts by so many who lent a helping hand. Both Harvey and Irma brought out the best in many people. Scenes of children, the elderly, even pets, being rescued restored some faith in the goodness of humanity. But a sad side note to these heroic and selfless acts was this. Not only were there brisk sales of plywood to board-up homes, two other commodities topped the list of most wanted: booze and condoms. In fact, before all other staples were stripped from store shelves, these two items led the list of prized purchases.

As death and destruction loomed on the horizon, some were making sure that their cravings for sex and alcohol were satisfied. Lust and hedonism were more important than self-preservation. “As it was in the days of Noah,” Jesus warned in Luke 17:26, “so it will also be in the days of the Son of Man.” Christ described the times of the Great Flood in ordinary details: “They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.”

The people of Noah’s time were like those fools in Florida, craving condoms and booze. They too were drinking (if their consumption was only water that wouldn’t have been scripturally noteworthy) and “marrying” (a polite way of saying they were sexually focused). What happened in Texas and Florida was bad, but not exactly an ark-worthy Deluge. But beware, 2 Peter 3:12 warns that it’ll be the fire next time. (“The heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat!”) There will be no boat big enough to escape that judgment!

An encouraging word: GOD’S MARVELOUS WORKS

I will tell of all Your marvelous work (Psalm 9:1 NKJV). I like the wording of the KJV which says “show” instead of “tell.” The great need of our hour is to actually see the miracles of God. Every week, almost every day, I am privileged to witness the supernatural in demonic manifestations and the glory of the Lord overcoming immense evil. The Christian world is full of sermons and salvation solicitations. Nothing wrong with that. But what needs to be seen is not another slickly packaged presentation but the demonstration of God’s work. By all means let’s preach the Word, but isn’t it time to see that it really works?
