America Gone Crazy

Is the body politic of America losing its mind? Just weeks ago, a statue was nothing more than a relic of recognition related to some long-forgotten individual. Now, such symbols are flashpoints of cultural divide. Last month, Donald Trump was our controversial new twitter President. Now, TV pundits and psychiatrists are weighing in on his sanity. If you ask me, it’s America that is in danger of losing its mind. Take the case of what happened a few days ago in St. Louis, Missouri.

Police were called to the residence of a black man, who had transgendered to a woman, who came at police with a knife. He/she, was shot dead after attacking and wounding an officer. That led to a black/transgendered “black-trans-lives-matter” protest march. During the march, protesters converged on a white man in a car, and began to pummel his vehicle. He apparently panicked and drove into some of the marchers, though not seriously injuring any of them. That driver, not the marchers, was arrested.

If your sense of political correctness about all this is confused, you’re likely not alone. It almost makes one want to stay home and avoid all human contact, lest someone be offended by something which last year, or even last week, wouldn’t have been an issue of contention. And don’t dare say that there was possible fault on “both sides,” or you’ll be branded a bigot by some cultural storm trooper who has decided that your right of free speech ended with the election of a Republican President.

In the midst of all this, bigots, hate-mongers of the left and right, Antifa anarchists, and sexual stigmatizers of all persuasions have seized the day. Everyone seems offended at something. Better not say what you think or offer an opinion that hasn’t passed the muster of self-appointed defenders the latest cause célèbre. In Canada, a judge in Ontario has been ordered to appear before a disciplinary panel of his peers, because, are you ready for this, he was seen wearing a Trump “Make America Great Again!” cap. No, I’m not kidding. It was reported in, of all places, “The New York Times.”

Satan has got to love this. He is the author of confusion (1 Cor. 14:33) and discord (Prov. 6:19). He foments strife and contention (Prov. 13:10). In society, and in the church, the devil delights in sowing rebellion and division. His demons pit us against one another, and any excuse will do. We all need to remember the words of Psalm 133:1, “How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity.”

An encouraging word: ON BEING A PILGRIM

Don’t you sometimes feel like your feet are in two different worlds? One, in the life you live on earth, and the other in heaven? I do. Like this week when a judge ruled that a high school football coach couldn’t kneel in the middle of the field, after the game, and give thanks to God . The logic of those opposing prayer is so satanic it’s hard to feel at home in America any more. I feel like the heroes of Hebrews chapter 11 (verse 16) of whom it is said, “They desire a better country-a heavenly one.” I intend to do my best to “occupy” my culture and country and fight for what’s right. But I remind myself ever so often, I am like those who were as “strangers and pilgrims on the earth.” I am a pilgrim here. My home is heaven.
